• Installation to server question

By Peter Bittle 2 decades ago

    Gents,

Thanks for the work, I'm hoping that VIC will be able to help us keep track of our customer information in a more timely fashion. However, as the Notes admin I'm a bit fuzzy on the installation. I've read over the discussions and found that your primary concept is for a stand-alone install, that tested out fine for me. However, there was one brief mention that with a server install the "Notebook" database should be local only. Is that the only one that should be local? In a server install how do I specify in your path fields this information? Should I use ("server","path") as in scripts, or with slashes?

Just an observation, there was talk of using the Notes.ini file for variable storage and setting. I am running my Domino server on an AS400. Modifying the Notes.ini file, though possible is rather a pain on this platform. I don't know what the difference in platform might play into this particular issue.

    Thanks again,

    Peter Bittle

      Hi, Peter,

As you've noticed, the primary concept is a stand-alone install, so the least problematic way of doing a shared deployment is to replicate. The intent is to support mobile workers on laptops or working remotely. The Notebook database should be copied, not replicated. That's how I use it personally. Actually, I suppose there's no reason you couldn't really share the Notebook, but that particular db is just intended to be used like personal sticky notes or a scratch pad, and isn't intended to hold shared info. Originally it was just a straight copy of the Personal Journal that comes with Notes.

Use slashes and indicate paths relative to your data directory. All of the NSFs are assumed to be on the same server. In the future that may change, but probably not soon (unless you reeeeally need it either want to make the mod yourself or commission a change).

There shouldn't be any mods to the Notes.ini file. If I hadn't gotten rid of all references (except one), I should have. All of the configuration items that used to appear in Notes.ini are now set in the Global Profile doc in vic_config.nsf. The one exception should be $CratchitWelcomePageOpened. This is how I prevent multiple occurrences of the "My Activities" page (and I'm still open to a suggestion on how to do that more elegantly).
