Trackback explained?

Hi there,
I'm still confused about trackbacks.... could somehow fill in the blanks:
a) Add manual trackback: I created a post replying to Paul's entry. So I go to Pauls site, paste the URL of my post into the field and off I go.
b) Add manual trackback Paul has replied in his post to my entry. So he goes to my post pastes his URL and off he goes.
c) Trackback ping? I comment in my entry on Robert's blog which is not Blogsphere and has no manual trackback field. How do I ping his blog to create a trackback to my entry?
d) Robert has some Blogsoftware that sends trackback pings. What would be the URL to ping my blog entry
