Avatars not working

Hi,
I cannot seem to get avatars working, I have checked all the obvious stuff, like allowing them but when I try to set them I get
"Registration Failed - A general error has occured (no more info)"
I havent enabled session tracking but am guessing that its not involved.
Any ideas? (thanks much for a response)
