I won't get into the asinine discussion of whether this should be posted on OpenNTF.org or not.

I vote on Peter's side.

1. The template has alot of code in it that you can do whatever you want with it, including going out and writing your own scanners to make it useful, or just use the code in your own applications/admin tools.

2. Alot of people use the free scanner and the template together without paying anyone, stop whining.

My review of 4.0.

1. I signed up, received my password and downloaded the template.

2. I opened the template up in my 8.0 client.

3. I did not sign the template (should I have??)

4. I received lots of ECL popups asking me to allow Peter's signor ID access to my system.

5. The first time I clicked on "client based scanner download & installation wizard," the box just sat there and did nothing for a long time, and I saw no network traffic in my system tray on the NIC icon.

6. I killed the notes client (nsd -kill)

7. restarted notes. Clicked again on the "client based scanner download & installation wizard," but still nothing.

I clicked CTRL-BREAK, and noticed that there was another ECL popup hiding in the background.

I went to the Security settings, and enabled the check boxes for all of the options for Peter's signor ID.

Restarted the client, and then clicked on the "client based scanner download & installation wizard" again. This time, I noticed in the status bar that a few java files were being downloaded.

8. After it finished, I wasn't notified that anything had been installed, but the dialogue box went away and the status bar was empty.

9. I downloaded the demo licenses by clicking on the "obtain client based scanner demo licenses wizard" I did this simply because I was poking around and it seemed like what I should do. I would have thought that the installation wizard would have done this for me. There weren't any clear instructions to follow these two steps. Perhaps there should be a better install wizard, with like Step 1. Click here, Step 2., click here, Step 3. create scanner job......

10. I created scanner job once the demo licenses were downloaded and installed. Nothing happened. I even created a check mark in the selection column instead of just selecting the job. Nothing happened. tried several times.

11. I quit Lotus Notes, and restarted again, went to the scanner jobs view, selected the job in the selection column, and clicked Run Selected Job with Client Scanner. This time it created the java popup window and gave me the option to start the job with a temperature bar with the status.

Seems to be working fine now, but at first was a bit difficult to get started.

Just wanted to provide some feedback on the install process for those who haven't installed it yet, and provide some insight to the developer on how an unaccustomed admin might stumble or become confused so that you can make it just a little bit more intuitive.
