Peter, I think there is a justifiable place for DomainPatrol on OpenNTF. I think it's a terrific tool, and the licensing doesn't raise any troubling issues, because I go to your site for the scanner.

As for freeware and GPL being a marketing ploy--well, that's a ugly way to say the obvious truth, and lacks many of the subtleties by which open source benefits us all.
