Details
Here's some preliminary and partial descriptions...

The aspect of synchronization within Folders@Hand can be characterized as following. The portrayal of features and benefits here is not comprehensive, it's limited to those closely related to synchronization.

• The synchronization is applied between distinct "media" kinds. As distinguished from Notes replication between replicas of the same Notes database, which is in fact beneficial to be utilized with variable setups of Folders@Hand as well
• The core and primary media is Notes database, all others are optional, since present level of sophistication
• Secondary media kinds can be file system, version control system, relational database etc.
• As of secondary media, the file system support is currently implemented, with smb protocol, using jCIFS-library.
• Possibility of implementing other media kinds have kept in mind all the way, so it should be relatively easy to add support for CVS, Subversion
• Web view doesn't necessarily have to be based on yet another "media", because Notes already provides such virtually straight out of the box
• Generally speaking, synchronization is just a "back-end" mechanism, which provides, together with some other parts of the design, a benefit and capability of letting the users reach the same up-to-date information and documents in "folder-like" structure by using the medium/view/tool
1. they like or are accustomed to
2. which are currently online or otherwise available for them
3. the architect/administrator of the particular setup has configured to be used
• "At reach" is a quite close synonym to "at hand".
• Folders@Hand is a solution that provides users with the folders of documents at hand for effective searching, viewing and editing in extended selection of mediums.
• Extends the availability, accessibility and flexibility of the information and its supply in, but not limited to, the following terms:
1. Proximity. Folders can be configured to be synchronized on server in each office/company/city and on personal workstations/laptops. In each of them, folders can be provided in any or all mediums.
2. Quickness of transmission and usage. Mainly consequence of proximity.
3. Higher choice of and independence from clients used for viewing and editing
4. Independence from existence or availability of particular kind of connection or authorization. For example, both the file system and the Notes mediums can be used online or off-line without any need for VPN connection.

More to come...

This concept and implementation is already matured and in use within our company.

Please give some feedback about your experiences with it, it will be much valued.
