DomainPatrol - Response: Commercial vs OpenSource

Created on Oct 3, 2007

I was the original poster of the "Open Source?" thread. I would like to clarify my position on this topic.

I am not against a vendor posting reference to a commercial product in conjunction with an open source project on OpenNTF. My confusion resulted from the belief I needed to pay for and download files from the commerical site to utilize the OpenNTF project. This was a result of my interpretation of the "Help" document that states: "The DomainPatrol database is OpenSource and the workstation-based scanner is licensed as freeware. You can download the database template here but if you need the scanner goto http://domainpatrol.org".

There is no reference to a "server" scanner in the Help document. Had I understood the difference between the server (commercial) and workstation (freeware) products I would not have been confused.

Other projects on this site reference commercial versions, but clearly discriminate between the two offerings.

Perhaps some re-wording in the project "Help" document would prevent any future misunderstanding.

In this field you can enter the actual content.

You can use the rich text editor for rich text formating. You can also enter HTML to embed objects, e.g. to embed a YouTube video or a screenshot of the project. In this case use '[' and ']' to mark the passthrough HTML as such.

Please note that the first time you use the new UI your description is converted from rich text to MIME. You might want to copy and paste the raw plain text from the old UI in the new UI so that you don't loose information.
