• Notification digest

By John Smart 2 decades ago

What do you do when you get 5 error notification messages in your email? Do you really read them, or do you delete them and then go to the Events By Date, collapse all, then expand the errors?

If the latter, like me, then it's a strong indication that the individual email notification messages aren't really important, they are effectively just a single vague "hey, look over here" message repeated 5 times.

What I want is a way to answer the question: "Oh, I got 5 error messages, should I concerned?" even before I look in OpenLog.

The best solution I can come up with is a digest option on the notification that will consolidate all related log entries into a single email, subtotaled by database, agent, and error.

    • A Newsletter Agent...

What I've done is write a simple newsletter agent in the OpenLog database and by setting up an appropriate view for newsletter formatting, I can get a summary of selected entries all in one email.

I have a daily (early morning) agent that sends me everything and a more frequent newsletter agent that sends me only errors

here's a snippet of the body of a newsletter I receive:

Please review the following list of errors reported in the My Agent Log….

      # Title
09/11/2007 07:31:44 AM Update DB2 INITIALIZE: Error: Unable to send mail
09/11/2007 06:31:52 AM Update DB2 INITIALIZE: Error: Unable to send mail

do this if you just want to know that some event doc has been created, w/o all the docs and messages being shown in the newsletter
