Quick update: Thread Viewer in Discussion Template

Posted by Niklas Heidloff | September 18, 2009

Based on feedback from several people I've updated the rich client discussion prototype. As previously it uses the Java Views on the 'home page' for a consistent look & feel with the Notes PIM applications. The second page comes up when you open a topic or document from a view. This page contains a thread viewer that allows viewing of other documents of the same thread without having to leave the page. So users can write their response while they are reading other documents of the thread.

The biggest change is that the thread viewer has been moved to the left column (see screenshot below). We want the same experience on both pages. On the first page there is the view navigator and the second page now contains the thread/topic navigator. I'm not good in stylesheets but I've tried to make the topic navigator look similar to the view navigator (e.g. same background color, same color for selected entries). From this thread navigator you can open documents in the preview area at the bottom or you can open documents on their own page/full screen. As previously the navigator even shows the position of a new response before it has been saved.

I've never seen the need for the date/time in the view, it just took up room. Especially if you have show unread.
I just want their brief description / subject and name.

Step by step I think we're getting close to a really cool thread viewer. Great step forward Niklas.

What about emulating the conversation style of gMail. The parents are visible directly above the child. It can be openend/closed by clicking on it's title. The topic navigator would disappear and an 'expand/collapse all' actions could show you the entire conversation in place and editable as a stream. There should also be a way to "star" specific topics or responses so they stay open by default and can be easily added/viewed to the "My Favorites" and it would be nice to see "Everyones Favorites" (a concatenation ot everyone's personal fav folder). It would be really neat if Everyone's favorites could also be expanded to see each person's individual favs. This way people could easily share docs by saying "look in my favs folder in XYZ docs". Keep up the great work!

Thanks Ryan, I haven't tried gmail recently. So cannot comment on this yet.

The everyone's favorites folder sounds interesting but I don't want to reinvent dogear specifically for the discussion. I'll discuss this with the other developers.
