OpenNTF and Websphere Portal

Posted by Anil Vartak | October 29, 2006

We're in the process of setting up a Websphere portal 6.0 server for OpenNTF which Prominic has been kind enough to provide a machine and host for us. We have Single Sign On working with the OpenNTF site and even have a few portlets working thanks to Vince. We still have a few configuration and UI things we need to get ironed out, but hopefully soon you will be able to create a "My OpenNTF" page where you can add your own favourite sections of OpenNTF on a single page as individual portlets, such as a blog portlet, Top Downloads portlet, mainbar portlet, etc. Here's a sneak peek at what we're working on. If anyone who is familiar with Websphere Portal 6.0 and/or Domino configuration would like to help out, please send me an email at anil AT openntf.org or post a comment here - we could do with some help!

Looking forward to see the portletize OpenNTF. Would be real cool if add in some Web 2.0/Ajax component. Maybe something like drag & drop project to favorite.

@1 - I will include full details on how we implemented it when we launch it, but I will say it's not been all smooth sailing! If you have any specific questions you can email me directly.

@2 - That's a good idea..will add it to the list of things we look at. We're still exploring what elements make the best use of Portal.

Are you all using Portlet Factory to develop Domino Portlet? How easy can it generate a working form from LN? Pros & Cons. I'm doing some evaluation of WPS and hoping to get some inside from "Real" case implementation.

@5 - Not sure how you will take my words, since I am from IBM so cannot be 100% unbiased.
Portlet Factory can create a form from a LN form very easily, but the powerful thing is that you can then add controls and other elements not available in a standard Notes form access from the web. Basically it lets you port your app to the web and then improve it.

I've tried Portlet factory and Lotus Component Designer and although Portlet factory is more sophisticated, getting the whole Rational Developer and Portal set up running takes a lot of effort. Lotus Component Designer is a something Notes developers will find a lot easier to use although it is in beta and has limited capabilities right now.

The portlets you see in the screenshot are done using just RAD and java code. There is a Lotus Notes view portlet but we're yet to figure out how to get it to work

Hey,
The lotus notes view portlet is very easy to get working. The only limitions is that you can only expose "View". Hence the name! If you have any specific questions please send me an email and I will be glad to help you out!
