After some playing around in the code, I changed the _GoTo JS function in the JS Header of the view template and hard coded "&count=30". This achieves the result I wanted. I would have thought that the variable 'perpage' would control this and indeed it does in some circumstances. Hard coding this to 30 does not work.

A WIBNI would be that topics per page is set in the config area of the database.
